Inter Law – Insurers threaten to deny UAE road accident claims

Insurers threaten to deny UAE road accident claims – 20/03/2017Insurance companies have threatened to deny the accident claims of 200 motorists involved in the United Arab Emirate’s worst ever road accident unless police are able to identify the driver responsible for causing the accident.

The massive pile-up occurred on the highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai last week after thick fog engulfed the road. The accident claimed three lives and injured another 347 people. Now some insurers are refusing to pay out after many motorists unknowingly signed polices that contained clauses stating that the driver responsible must be named in the police accident report before claims could paid.

However, according to Mohammad Mazhar Hamada, a director at Emirates Insurance Society, motorists could still launch a claim against an unidentified party and insurance companies refusing to pay out could be penalised.

The accident which happened on March 11 th has spurred campaigners to call for better guidelines on driving in poor conditions. Police have said that the highway may be closed in future when fog poses a threat to road safety.
