Inter Law – Forged Asbestos Certificates

Man found guilty of forging asbestos certificates – 26/11/2007A Cleethorpes health and safety inspector has been found guilty of assuming false credentials to carry out asbestos inspections in local firms – and has been jailed for 18 months.

Workplace Law reports that Barrie Christy defrauded at least four companies by performing inspections without having undergone the necessary training – earning at least £10,000 in the process.

Grimsby crown court heard that Mr Christy also forged certificates to “pretend that asbestos analysis had been done”.

Prosecution lawyer Ian Goldsack said that these documents were therefore “bogus”, with their names and signatures “a complete fiction”.

Mr Christy was found by the jury to have breached the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.

All firms in the UK, for their part, are required to keep a detailed asbestos management plan.

Asbestos is the single biggest cause of work-related deaths in the UK, accounting for 4,000 deaths a year – around 15 times the current rate of fatal accidents at work.
