Inter Law – NHS Pays Out ВЈ4m

NHS Trust pays out ВЈ4m – 12/11/2007A single East London NHS Trust has paid out over £4 million in medical negligence claims cases over the past year, it has emerged.

The Ilford Guardian reports that the Barking, Havering and Redbridge Trust paid out the injury related sum over the 2006/07 period – with costs split roughly evenly between damages and legal fees.

Moreover, the seven-figure sum puts the Trust among the worst-performing in the country regarding payouts.

Speaking to the newspaper, Ilford North MP Lee Scott commented: “It’s very worrying that so much money is being wasted in this way.”

Recent cuts to services at the local King George Hospital were cited by the MP as one of the potential reasons behind the high damages amount.

However, a spokesperson for the Trust thought otherwise.

“The Trust is one of the largest and busiest in the NHS, and it also offers regional services such as cancer and neurosurgery,” she said.

“Having one of the largest maternity units in England can also lead to high-cost settlements.

“Recent reports show that the Trust is meeting all of its targets for patient care, and is consistently improving its service.”
