Inter Law – Police cars cause an average of 1000 accidents a year

Police cars cause an average of 1000 accidents a year – 18/03/2017Recent statistics have shown that in the last five years on duty police cars have been involved in 5431 accidents. These accidents have resulted in the deaths of nine people and left 55 people seriously injured. While it is accepted that the police force will need to respond quickly to certain situations, the number of accidents is caused while on blue-light calls is high.

According to some members of the Scottish Parliament an average of one thousand accidents every year is not acceptable. Especially as this figure only relates to car accidents caused by police cars and does not take into account accidents caused by other emergency vehicles. A call has been made to re- assess the safety procedures currently in place to avoid such accidents occurring. New measures should also be considered to reduce the number of causalities caused by police drivers, and make the roads safer for all motorists.
